WHERE NUTRITIOUS MEETS DELICIOUS – “WINNER’S CIRCLE”

The cafeteria staff from Claremont Elementary School and Catawba County Health Department Health Educators All three school systems, The Catawba County Health Department, and Catawba County Health Partners recently kicked off Winner’s Circle in three schools: Claremont Elementary School, Grandview Middle School, and Newton-Conover High School.  The Eat Smart Move More grant helped purchase promotional items to distribute at each of these schools.  Local businesses donated discount coupons to help promote the kick offs including: Subway, Hickory Dickory Dock, Gondolier’s, McDonalds, YMCA, Skateland, and The Hickory Crawdads.   A couple of Charlotte Panthers cheerleaders also helped kick off some of the Winner’s Circle programs by autographing Frisbees and magnets.

Winner’s Circle Healthy Dining and Menu Labeling Program was kicked off in these school cafeterias to help students identify great tasting, healthy menu items at school.  The program applauds all the healthy choices available in school cafeterias.   The healthy and tasty menu items are identified by a logo with a purple star and gold fork.

Menu items are nutritionally analyzed to guarantee that all the identified items are healthy. The program emphasizes nutritional guidelines that offer disease prevention for the majority of chronic diseases. These guidelines build on fruits, vegetables, grains, and calcium. The nutritional analysis ensures that the fat, calorie, sugar, and sodium (salt) intake are within the recommended guidelines.
